GIRLS FLEEING THEIR HOME IN FEAR OF FGM

Girls Safe House in Tanzania

Girls in Tanzania have to face a horrid fate when they are forced to go through FGM. This is usually at the four-week school break, which is also referred as “the cutting season”. They are being forced to go through Female Genital Mutilation, excision of external sexual organs to be exact.

Girls in Tanzania have to face a horrid fate when they are forced to go through FGM. This is usually at the four-week school break, which is also referred as “the cutting season”. They are being forced to go through Female Genital Mutilation, excision of external sexual organs to be exact.

This procedure is often performed by someone that is thought to be proficient enough to do it. This risks the lives of those girls that will remember the horrifying act for the rest of their lives. There are often complications from poor hygiene and treating of these unnecessary wounds!
The procedure is performed by:

1%

Medical Personnel

82%

Circumcisers

14%

Midwives

90%

of the girls and women who know the practice, believe that it should be abolished

The whole procedure is illegal in Tanzania, but the majority of the people don’t care, at least not in the rural areas of the country, where the law isn’t being read so strictly. People tend to think that this behavior is “mandatory”. The fact that Tanzanian women are mistreated socially and economically, despite the legislation that guarantees gender equality, doesn’t help to gather the courage to stand for women rights and disagree with the men they live in social contact for the rest of their lives.

The age when the procedure is performed varies:
28%

of girls have been cut by
the age of one year

29%

have not been cut until they are 13 years of age or older

50%

of the girls that are cut, go through this painful operation between the age of 1 – 13 years old

The fact that the law protects only underaged girls, is a shame. It has been reported that some girls that manage to avoid the practice, are being cut when they are over 18 years old. This is where the social pressure comes in place. If the relatives of this young woman or her husband requires that the cut is necessary, there may be so enormous pressure that the young woman doesn’t see any other way to keep her normal life, her baby and social connections, than to go through FGM.

Fortunately, some of the girls are brave enough to flee their homes, so that they don’t have to face the cruelties of FGM. This is where the Girls Safe House come to aid.

How We Support the Safe House

We were contacted by Angela (the wife of the Rev Glenn Coggins from The Parish of St Michael’s, East Ardsley) through Amazon UK-platform, where we sell our products also.

She was inquiring about the possibility to purchase our Sanitary Cloth Pads at a discount, and soon I and my wife decided that this was exactly what we were going to help right from the start. The very being of Caring Panda is to help change the world to a better place as a whole.

After some e-mailing, it was clear to me, that this is real charity and not some fake re-sellers trying to get products for a discount.

So we decided to give them a discount, and we will give these products for free, when we sell these enough that it wouldn’t hurt our future to give these away for free.

After growing enough we plan to support the education in Tanzania and other countries around the world. But that is the long term goal, for now, we are happy to help the people in Tanzania.

Pictures and News from the Safe House

Beth Coggins, Angela Coggins’s daughter visited the safe house and delivered Caring Pandas washable sanitary pads to the girls at the safe house. I received an e-mail from Beth, this is what she wrote:

Dear Andy,

I am Angela’s daughter who visited the safe house in June.

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for the support and discount you gave on the Caring Panda product.

The girls at the safe house, were amazed when I gave them the sanitary pads, as they had no idea that there was such things.

This has greatly improved their lives by being able to carry on simple tasks whist being on their period, in the past they would have to take a week off to bed rest and use leafs/ used materials from the ground.

The pads can also benefit girls who have had FGM as it will reduce inflection and help their self esteem.  Overall this product has massively improved their daily life, I felt overwhelmed  with emotion from the girls. As the safe house was filled with hope and laughter from the girls. Everyone couldn’t keep from smiling when they received Caring Panda.

Thank you again for your generosity and help with this. Myself and Angela will look forward to containing this life changing connection with your help if possible.

Kind Regards,
Beth Coggins
